At what age is it worth asking for a baby or newborn photo session?

The best time to photograph newborn babies is around 7-10 days of age. At this time, newborn babies spend most of their day resting and sleeping. This is the easiest time to get them into cute poses. Just like they were in the womb. From two weeks old, they suddenly start to grow, moving around more, stretching their little hands and feet, stretching. By this time, it's almost impossible to get them into small, rounded positions while they sleep.

There are many different poses - I always aim for natural settings. One of my favourites is the taco - it's what babies almost always like. It reminds them of their time in the womb.

It is a very nice memory for the whole family when the little baby is in the hands of the parents. It is so wonderful to see the fragile, perfect babies in the giant, protective hands. These pictures are always a favourite of parents and grandparents.

How to prepare for a baby photo shoot?

It is very important to register early, even if you do not know the exact date of delivery. Sometimes I get phone calls from parents saying their baby has been born, but I can't make an appointment because I don't have any space available.

When the baby is born, we will specify which day the photo shoot should take place. When we are not photographing in your home, but in a studio for example, the most important thing is to have enough milk/feed, diaper, pacifier. (Pacifier is always a great help when falling asleep, moving between poses. It's good if the parents are also prepared with 2-3 sets of clothes for the joint photos. It's a good idea for parents to dress up a bit: simple, plain clothes, a top. A change of clothes is not a bad thing either, because often newborn babies are without diapers and sometimes minor accidents happen.

Accessories for baby photography

Aim for naturalness: it's best to avoid bright colours and striking patterns, as the focus should be on the baby. Pastel and pale shades are particularly good. Blue for boys, mauve for girls, but always very subtle and understated. For girls, a little dress with a flower headband looks good. For boys, simple trousers and hats.

Why does it take 2-3 hours to photograph a newborn baby?

The time of the photo shoot varies a lot. I always advise parents to try to keep the baby awake before the newborn photo session and to schedule feeding for the time of arrival. If all goes well and the baby has eaten well, he or she will fall asleep fairly quickly and the baby photography can begin. If he's very calm, it takes about 2 hours to get the photos done, if he's not sound asleep it can sometimes take a little longer.

From photographing the baby to handing over the pictures

After I have taken the pictures of the newborn baby, I come home after the photo shoot and select the best ones. I upload them to an online platform so you can choose the ones you like the most. I will retouch the selected pictures and deliver them to you no later than 1 week after the shoot.

Many parents are nervous about a photo shoot. When we meet and get to know each other, that excitement fades and is replaced by a calm joy. It's a bit like a wedding photo shoot: at the wedding, everyone wants a photographer, everyone wants a photo of the first kiss, because it's an unrepeatable and wonderful moment. It's like the birth of a baby.

The first days: this is when parents and newborn get to know each other. This magical love comes through in the photographs, even decades later. These are the moments I am capturing for you. My aim and desire is to make you smile every time you look at the photo.
